For my sixth adventure I would like to talk about a technology that revolutionized the movie watching experience, at least according to me.

4DX is a South Korean movie theater technology that introduces extra effects in both the auditorium and the seats. These effects include wind, water, snow, and fog for the auditorium. This is while the seats move many different ways that are much more extreme than other similar technologies like D-Box.

The difference between 4DX and D-Box is just that it costs a bit more, and one has auditorium effects while the other one the seats just move and rumble a little bit.

My 4DX experience was first introduced to me at Scotiabank Theatre at the West Edmonton Mall, one of the biggest malls in North America.

The movie I watched there was Thor Love and Thunder, which had effects like snow and crazy seat effects. I felt like when a battle was occurring that I was about to get thrown out of my seat!

However, one thing of note is that most of the theaters in Canada are converted auditoriums, and only one theater actually has the nicer seats. The seats that are available at almost all the other auditoriums only have the basic seats without water effects.

The only reason I found out is when I had the pleasure of visiting the Yonge and Dundas Cineplex on one of my other vacations. That time I watched Dragon Ball Z, and the seats moved quite a bit whenever there were fight scenes going on. However, the seats would also spray water out of a little nozzle located in the seat in front of you.

Is it worth traveling that far just for the genuine experience? Definitely not.

On the other hand, if you ever get a chance to go to South Korea, going to CGV Yongsan iPark mall will give you the best experience.  This is because since the technology was pioneered there, they have auditoriums with the top tier 4DX seats, and ScreenX technology, which projects images onto all three walls.

The reason why I would like to share this experience with you is because Cineplex is about to open a local 4DX auditorium at Cineplex Metrotown, just in time for Avatar 2 The Way Of The Water. Although they most likely went with the cheapest seats, it is great that we’ll be able to experience this without traveling to another province or country.
